Academic Requirements

  • Bachelor's: Upper secondary certificate equivalent to Finnish matriculation
  • Master's: Relevant Bachelor's degree from a recognised university
  • PhD: Master's degree with research proposal (tuition-free for all nationalities)
  • Programme-specific prerequisites may apply for technology and health sciences

English Language

  • IELTS Academic: 6.5+ or TOEFL iBT: 92+ for most English-taught programmes
  • PTE Academic and Cambridge English certificates also accepted
  • Finnish or Swedish proficiency required only for programmes taught in those languages
  • Some universities set higher requirements for competitive programmes

Financial Requirements

  • Non-EU tuition: €6,000–€18,000 per year depending on university and field
  • Application fee: €100 for non-EU/EEA applicants (from 2025)
  • Living costs: €900–€1,200/month (Helsinki); €600–€900 in other cities
  • Proof of funds: ~€6,720/year required for residence permit (separate from tuition)

Residence Permit

  • Apply via Migri (Finnish Immigration Service) after receiving admission
  • Valid passport, admission letter, and tuition payment or scholarship proof
  • Comprehensive health insurance for entire stay
  • Biometric data collected at Finnish embassy or VFS centre

Scholarships

  • Merit-based tuition waivers: 50%, 75%, or 100% of fees at most universities
  • Aalto University, Helsinki, Tampere, and Turku offer competitive scholarship programmes
  • Apply for scholarships simultaneously with degree application
  • Doctoral positions are salaried — no tuition fees for PhD studies
